The “Island of Bali” is unique among all other islands or cultures of
the world, and, until recently, was visited only by a few of the more
adventuresome travelers. The mere reference to “Bali” immediately
brings a combined feeling of mystery, romance and seclusion.
This “aura”, coupled with the physical attributes of the islands, as well as the highly developed and sensitive nature of the arts and the handicraft of the Balinese, is the magnet that is attracting an ever increasing volume of tourists who have been discouraged and disenchanted with the haphazard and uncontrolled commercialism which has deteriorated many of the major resort areas of the world. The entire design concept of Nusa Dua, therefore, must necessarily protect this image by “down playing” commercial or “hard line” design to a soft unobtrusive approach which blend with, and not be in opposition to, the Balinese architecture and culture. Much thought has been given by various planning consultants, economists and social anthropologists to the proper and orderly development of Bali ; and among the many considerations emerging from these reports, the unified opinion and conclusion was that Bali, and the Balinese culture and way of life, must be protected from any “self serving” commercial ventures which would, in the long term, dilute Bali’s strong economic position as a future “World Tourism Destination Resort”. Therefore, the Nusa Dua Resort Area is being oriented to blend or flow into these surroundings, by means of the compulsory “Design Criteria” and operational format. The purpose of the “Design Criteria” is to establish minimum standards of design to protect all investors and hotel developers within the Nusa Dua project, and is not meant to restrict imaginative design nor encroach upon the professionalism or ability of the individual Architect. An informal meeting with the BTDC’s design staff for a general review of the “Design Criteria”, prior to the submittal of the Schematics is recommended, as it will materially assist the Architect in his design compliance. |
